Strong Willed Children – Nurturing and Developing Your Strong Willed Child

Each child is a unique individual that needs to be nurtured and developed throughout his or her childhood. Children grow through experiences, learning and maturity. Each child has a set of strengths and weaknesses. It is a parent’s job to nurture and focus on their child’s strengths rather than their weaknesses. Strong willed children are always asking questions. They have strong opinions even at a young age. They are resistant to limitations.

While these sound like positive attributes in an adult, these attributes can be challenging for a parent to handle in a young child that isn’t mature enough to control these traits. To a strong willed child, the word “no” is the start of a battle of wills. These children love to debate and also have to get the last word in during a conversation.

Strong willed children can be quite dramatic and will use this skill to their advantage when they are trying to get their way. Reasoning with a strong willed child requires a lot of patience, consistency and self-control on the part of the parent. Strong willed children need to be heard and they need to know that you listened to them. They also want explanations for everything. Parents need to be strong and caring in their decisions and encourage their child to listen to the reasons behind their decision.

It takes a lot of patience to explain your decision to your strong willed children. It is important to do it in a firm and caring manner so that your child understands that it is the right decision for you and your child. This approach can be difficult for parents who were raised in the generation of children should be controlled at all times and when a parent says “no” it means “no” and that’s the end of it. Giving your strong willed child a voice can make all the difference in the world in your relationship with your child. And, that doesn’t mean giving your child his or her way. It simply means taking the time to listen to them.

Raising strong willed children can be challenging. However it is also rewarding for both you and your child that you can communicate openly and have arguments and still love each other unconditionally. It is important to remember to always keep your child’s self-esteem in mind in all of your interactions. Children learn by example and you are their best role model.

Discipline For Children can be challenging. Visit http://www.disciplineforchildren.com for a step-by-step child discipline system to help put the peace and order back in your family.

Our Marvelous Roof the Sky

ONE of the most beautiful, ever-changing sights on earth is the sky. Its scope and grandeur simply stagger the imagination. The whole earth is enveloped with the sky’s endless majestic and colorful panorama. In the east a golden glow announces the dawn, while a crimson western sky bids the day adieu. There are moments when the sky may be adorned in a royal canopy of blue, or dismal gray or in resplendent white. White billowy, cotton-like clouds called “cumulus” proclaim a fine spring day; gay featherlike clouds called “cirrus” tell that summer is here, and a sporty fall mantle of clouds that appear like lamb’s wool betokens the nearness of winter.

At night the sky’s beauty is even more magnificent when bedecked in starry splendor. The breathless glory of the night is enhanced when the aurora weaves a delicate tapestry of color high overhead. Each garment assumes an infinite variety of shapes, all dazzling masterpieces of beauty, all creations of perfect art. Little wonder that worshipers of Jehovah referred to the beauties of our marvelous “roof” as “the wonderful works of the One perfect in knowledge,” “the wonderful works of God.” Job 37:14, 16.

Almost daily across the sky’s broad highway parade clouds of every size and description. Fluffy clouds, billowy clouds, fleecy clouds these are like glorious floats that silently glide by. There are white pillar clouds surrounded by straggling cloudlets, like children about their parents. There are wavy clouds and rolling clouds, the shapes and forms of which are worthy of the finest sculptor. There are huge clouds that look something like a mammoth cauliflower or an enormous white anvil.

The cumulonimbus, also called thunderheads, are massive. They are composed of billions of ice crystals. These formations can rise to 50,000 feet or more in height. A single formation can contain as much as 300,000 tons of water! An estimated 44,000 thunderstorms lash the earth’s surface every day, some 1,800 of them in action at any given moment! They are majestic in their awesomeness and from them can burst forth creation’s regal spectacle the rainbow. God speaks of it as “my rainbow,” obviously one of His wonderful works. Gen. 9:11-16.

Often the sky foretells the weather. In the western hemisphere when scattered cumulus clouds dot the sky, when the barometer remains steady or rises, and when the wind blows gently, fair weather will probably continue. The long curling clouds known as “mares’ tails” are generally a sign that foul weather, in the form of snow or heavy rain, will probably arrive within twenty-four hours. Also when dull-gray altostratus clouds darken the whole sky and the barometer drops, rain or snow will probably continue to fall. The Bible, at Matthew 16:2, 3, gives meaning to the fiery sky often seen at sunset: “When evening falls you are accustomed to say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is fire-red’; and at morning, ‘It will be wintry, rainy weather today, for the sky is fire-red, but gloomy-looking.’” A red sunrise presages the opposite of a red sunset.

Why the Sky Is Blue

What is this wonderful work of God we call “the blue sky”? Blue is not the color of air, as was believed by some in the nineteenth century. Nor is the blue due to light emitted by the atmosphere itself, for then it would appear blue at night. Were the air completely transparent or nonexistent, the sky would necessarily be as black as space, a fact confirmed by astronauts who journeyed above the atmosphere. “Up there, it’s a black-and-white world. There is no color,” said American astronaut Jim Lovell. But more recently spacemen returning from the surface of the moon have described the lunar surface as a nondescript gray.

Since the sky is not black to us on earth, the cause, then, must lie in the behavior of sunlight when it comes in contact with the substance of the atmosphere.

The color of the sky results from the air within less than one hundred miles of the earth. This belt of atmosphere is made up primarily of five gases, namely, nitrogen, oxygen, argon, water vapor (a compound of hydrogen and oxygen) and carbon dioxide. Besides these gases there are others that are rare, but in smaller amounts, such as helium, xenon, neon; and a few poisonous gases, such as methane, ammonia, carbon monoxide, nitrous oxide. Up to the realm of the highest familiar clouds the sky also holds quantities of foreign matter, such as pollen, dust, bacteria, soot, spores, volcanic ash, salt particles from the seas and dust from outer space.

When the sun’s radiation, which consists of electromagnetic waves of many different wavelengths, passes through the atmosphere, the longer wavelengths plow through the atmosphere quite easily and reach our earth. We may feel them as heat. But the shorter ones are scattered in all directions by the air molecules and other particles in the atmosphere. The blue light is bounced about again and again as it comes earthward from the sun. In other words, the blue sky is a gauzy glowing fabric spun of blue light and air. It is, moreover, only about twelve miles high; beyond this the sky darkens to violet. Above twenty miles the sky becomes black and the stars emerge.

Why the Other Colors?

Though generally blue, the sky may be red, orange, green, in fact, almost any color. It all depends on how light waves enter the atmosphere and what they encounter on their way down.

In the lower atmosphere are concentrated clouds, dust and all kinds of particle material. These being larger than air molecules, they scatter the longer wavelengths of light. When the sun is near the horizon its rays enter the atmosphere at a slant, passing through much more of the particle-laden air. All wavelengths are scattered, and only the longest red rays penetrate at all. So we have the ruddy hues at dawn and sunset. The more dust or cloud particles in the air, the deeper is the color. The less dust, the bluer the sky, because the long light waves come right through to the earth without being deflected, while the short blue light waves we see are the ones being bounced about by air molecules in the sky. Therefore, on a clear, relatively dust-free day, our marvelous “roof” is blue.

Other Sights in the Sky

When, after a few days of bright winter weather, high clouds, feathery and fragile, give to the sky a milky-white opalescence, bright rings, called halos, appear encircling the sun or moon. Halos of the moon are necessarily much fainter, and their colors are nearly imperceptible. In many parts of the world halos are visible, on the average, as often as once each four days. Even some of the brighter stars show coronas as thin, fleecy clouds glide slowly past. These halos may show several distinct concentric circles of color, each bluish on the inside, then passing through a yellowish white to a reddish brown on the outside. Sometimes they resemble circle rainbows in the sky. This phenomenon is caused by light waves being reflected off regularly shaped ice crystals floating high in the air.

The regular rainbow we see in the sky, which arouses awe and excitement, is formed by light playing on waterdrops as they fall. Each raindrop acts as a tiny prism, breaking down the sun’s white rays of mixed light into their component spectral colors. Occasionally droplets of mist can cause a rainbow, but generally it is the larger raindrops.

No two persons see the same rainbow. Each individual sees the rainbow from his particular point of view, because a rainbow is only light coming from a certain direction. Since the drops reflecting the light are falling, this means that we see a new rainbow formed by every new set of raindrops. What a magnificent gift from God the rainbow!

Sometimes a second rainbow may appear in the sky, lying outside the first and shining rather more faintly. Have you noticed, the colors in this rainbow are in the reverse order, with blue on the outside and red on the inside? This is because the light rays have undergone one more reflection on the internal surfaces of the raindrops and are reversed in much the same way as left becomes right and right becomes left in a mirror. But this extra reflection causes a reduction in intensity of the light, which is why the second rainbow is always dimmer.

The Aurora

Neither a rainbow nor a cloud formation, except perhaps a glorious sunset or sunrise, can compare with the aurora in the sky, that is, the northern or southern lights. No written description or photographs can convey the true magnificence of these ever-changing, luminous displays, often in vivid colors. Sometimes they are so bright that one can read by their light.

Generally the aurora flickers, suggesting a blazing fire just over the hill. Often the glow kindles into brilliance, assuming the shape of a huge arc, or it may take the form of bundles of rays like those of sunlight shining through holes in a cloud. These shafts of light may be pale white, emerald green, violet or rose red. At times the aurora may appear to hang in folds like a huge curtain or drapery of a stage. It may shimmer like the folds of a great screen hanging from the sky that is stirred by a silent wind. Or it may burst into feverish activity. Yellow becomes tinged with red and green as rays leap upward, subside, then dart ahead again.

There is nothing with which one can compare the delicate beauty and coloring of the aurora caused by clouds of electrically charged particles coming from the sun and entering the earth’s magnetic field. These particles collide with molecules of air, causing them to vibrate and give off the red, white, blue and green lights of their awesome displays. The aurora another of God’s marvelous gifts to man.

The Lightning Miracle

An estimated 9,000,000 lightning bolts strike the ground daily. About half the time, what people see in the sky as a single lightning flash is actually composed of up to ten successive strokes streaking along the same path as the first. There may be as many as forty pulses in a second, which is about how long the lightning’s path stays open. The heat in the path rises so abruptly that the surrounding air breaks the sound barrier in moving away. The result is thunder. The sky at such a time is alive with fire and sound.

There are various kinds of lightning. Heat lightning occurs on the horizon and is considered to be the reflection of strokes too far away to be directly seen or heard. Sheet lightning takes place inside clouds, blanketing them with a widespread flickering light. Ribbon lightning occurs when a strong wind blows the conductive channel of a multiple stroke to one side. The successive strokes rage upward a few feet apart, appearing like ribbons of light.

But what good is accomplished by all this fire filling the sky? It is now known that lightning helps greatly to fertilize the soil. Eighty percent of the atmosphere or sky is nitrogen, an essential food for plants. About 22,000,000 tons of this nutriment float over each square mile of the earth. But as it exists in the atmosphere nitrogen is unusable by plants. Before plants can take life from it, it must undergo a series of chemical changes, very much as food in our digestive system must undergo changes. Lightning in the sky touches off the series of changes. Air particles are made white-hot by lightning, for it can heat a two- to ten-inch channel of air hotter than the sun’s surface. Under this intense heat, the nitrogen combines with the oxygen in the air to form nitrogen oxides that are soluble in water. The rain dissolves the oxides and carries them down to earth as dilute nitric acid. Reaching the earth, the nitric acid reacts with the minerals of the earth, there to become nitrates on which plants can feed. Since plants can feed and live, man and animals can feed on plants and live!

What a marvelous gift lightning is from God to man! It does more than light the sky. Meteorologists estimate that lightning bombards the earth at a rate of more than one hundred times a second, transforming the upper air into fertilizer for plants!

God has given us, not only a practical sky, but a marvelous “roof” filled with awe-inspiring, ever-changing beauties and wonder, a sky that moves faithful men to praise Jehovah the Doer of all these wonderful things. Ps. 136:4.

Global Warming

“With public sentiment nothing can fail; without it nothing can succeed. Consequently, he who molds public sentiment goes deeper than he who enacts statutes than he who enacts or pronounces decisions.” Abraham Lincoln.

People exist always only in combination with nature, they can not be separated from it by any means and thus any kind of changes either positive or negative are always reflected in our lives. Long time ago one of the main problems on the planet became the global climate change. The Artic ice starts to melt and disappear, Latin America and South America suffer from lethal storms and floods. Europeans have to face melting glaciers, forest fires and heat waves. The tree rings and ancient coral in ice cores show that the world has not been as warm before as it is now. The warmest years were all starting since 1998. Most of these changes are influenced by human activities, as people burn the nature’s stores of coal, oil and natural gas. As a result billions of tones of carbon dioxide come into the air annually. Some scientists even suppose that these changes were caused by the dawn of agriculture. The well known phenomenon connected with global warming is greenhouse effect. CO2 is a greenhouse gas that makes the obstacle for the Sun radiation in the troposphere, the lower atmosphere. Some researches also show that cosmic rays are also connected with this effect. As soon as the atmospheric CO2 rises the global temperatures are luckily to rise by around 2C to 5 C. As a result the ice starts to melt, changes in clouds and vegetation occur and so on. When the glaciers melt, they will certainly cause some rivers to overflow, while others will be emptied. The situations with water resources might cause conflicts in different regions. All this will of course influence the natural ecosystems, as not all species can move quickly enough to put up with the global warming, for example coral reefs. The melting ices will influence not only the level of rivers’ water, but also the level of the oceans is disturbed. And if the level of the ocean rises 6 meters higher, that would be enough to flood the lands of billions of people.

Forests and oceans on our planet were able to absorb about half of the CO2 people produced, but since 2001 the amount of CO2 is twice bigger, which really limits the resources of the nature.

Methane is the second most important gas for greenhouse effect. The effect of methane is even 20 times greater than carbon dioxide, but there is less methane in the atmosphere. Methane influences 25% of global warming. Methane is produced by cows and termites. Thus agriculture and rice growing can produce methane. Besides coal mining and oil wells also produce methane. The level of methane in the atmosphere is constantly increasing – this is also an alarming fact for the Earth climate.

Public Health organizations are also worried about global warming, as researches state that the global warming is luckily to increase human mortality, when the cases of diseases transmitted by mosquitoes and other  parasites increase. But the American Council on Science and Health announced the conclusions of its study which show that such diseases could become serious problems for people disregarding global warming and that these diseases can be prevented not only by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The aim of these conclusions was certainly to make the diseases for the government not associated with global warming. The findings of the American Council on Science and Health were as follows:

- As the World Health Organization states that there are more than 500 million cases of malaria each year, malaria can not be caused only by warming of the climate, the increasing of the temperature can increase the incidents of malaria only by 10-16%.
- The ACSH studies were also stating that wealth can bring health and stimulate long living, whereas poverty is one of the reasons for hard diseases and short life spans. And public health would be put at risk when great economic costs could go on control of greenhouse gas emissions, as it could lead to poverty.
- Yellow fever, malaria and other tropical diseases could be prevented with fewer costs than those needed to restrict greenhouse gas emissions, for example: use of vaccinations, judicious use of pesticides and biological control methods, usage of mosquito and fly screens and public education.
- Spending money for reducing greenhouse gas emissions means that this money can not be used for better methods of preventing the above mentioned diseases, as better nutrition and sanitation.
This was one of the bright examples how the problem of global warming is not treated in a proper way in order to solve the financial and other problems of the high politic leaders, who care really not much for the future of the whole planet.

But no matter what is said, global warming still stays a great problem of the whole mankind. Certainly it is not possible to stop all human activities that disturb the atmosphere as they are connected with producing food and making people warm. But we should not forget that some predictions about global warming are close to tragic. People are controlling the whole Earth as there are almost no places, which never felt the hand of a human. And thus the whole responsibility is on people. There are certain measures to at least avoid the worst case, the disaster on the planet. People can reduce of greenhouse gas emissions with the help of energy conservation, like turning the computers and other technical devices off, when they do not use them, use compact fluorescent lights, unplug the chargers of cell phones and digital cameras and so on.

The issues of global warming and fossil fuel usage are certainly closely connected. The use of oil and natural resources will decline in a decade. But this would not reduce the carbon dioxide emissions automatically, the replacements with coal, heavy oil and tar sand contain even more carbon, if to make them produce the same amount of energy they will produce twice more carbon. But the fact is that all transport, roads and airports for this transport are useless without oil. To create a new transport system is a task for the whole society, not for an individual, besides it would need money, time, natural resources and a lot of brain power. So the previous arguments concerning a lot of money spent on the stopping or at least slowing the global warming can be put aside against these ones.

The projections made for the future state that Earth will be an ice planet without greenhouse effect, the Earth will get warmer, by the 2100 the temperature will be 1.5 C – 4.5 C warmer, the increase will be less in the southern hemisphere and greater in the northern hemisphere. The global temperature is connected with carbon dioxide level and methane level, which at the moment exceed greatly the past levels.

It is necessary to mention some facts concerning the future in order to understand why the global warming can be considered a disaster for the whole planet. Certainly it is not possible to know the future climate on Earth precisely, but some data are certain: every century brings the increase of the temperature of 1-2C. It is enough for Greenland and Antarctica to start melting, thus some part of northern areas could become a farmland and Sahara might become bigger. Storms can be stronger. Some countries like Bangladesh and Netherlands are luckily to vanish because of the ocean level rise up to 5 meters.

The term “climate forcings” is often used though it is hard to give its precise definition. To define it simply – this is an event that influences global climate. At this point it is necessary to mention that the weather and climate are different things, the weather is described with the help of variations of dryness or wetness, cold and heat. They do not play a great role for the whole picture on the Earth, but climate can be influenced by forcings, like for example a volcanic eruption can cool the climate on the whole Earth. Such forcing is called a short term forcing. An example of long term forcing may be continental drift which within millions of years changes the path of ocean currents. To anthropogenic forcings belong fossil fuel burning and agriculture. Not all forcings of humans result in global warming, sulfur dioxide from coal burning produces aerosols and they result in cooling.

These were the main negative influences on the climate that cause the global warming. They are rather serious and need urgent steps taken by people in order to avoid the catastrophes in the world of nature, to which we by the way also belong.

So the climate of the Earth should be an international concern and not only of scientists and ordinary people, but also of those who hold power in their hand and are able to make the politics work not only for money, but also for the future of the whole mankind. Unfortunately, these are mostly beautiful words and promises when elections are in the future as soon as they are over the real situation changes. Not a single national leader has come out publicly and said that the recent spate of hurricanes was the result of global warming, this is a part of conventional wisdom of environmentalists that they should not frighten the public, but should focus their interest on technical solutions, like for example hybrid cars and so on.

Global warming is such a problem that it is necessary to deal with all its aspects, which includes the politics. When politicians formulate their policy they need inputs from many disciplines and from science as well. But unfortunately global warming has become an absolutely political issue and politicians do their best to influence even science.

In 1992 at the Earth Summit the decision to prevent such dangerous climate change was taken. The first step was the 1997 Kyoto protocol, which is supposed to come into force in 2005.

One of the reports of the U.N. Panel on Climate Changes warns that the U.S. and other wealthy countries should immediately cut their oil and gas consumption and agree to get at least a quarter of their electrical energy from renewable resources – solar and wind power; and that they should double their research spending on low-carbon energy by 2010.In 1997 the U.S. Senate voted 95-0 to make Clinton Administration not to send the Kyoto treaty to Capitol Hill for ratification. In his first term president Bush rejected Kyoto. Russia ratified it, but most believe that Putin was made to do that as British Prime Minister and other European Union officials threatened not to let him become a member of World Trade Organization, which could cost Russia billions of dollars each year. But the chief economic adviser of Putin – Andrei Illarionov shows his doubts as for the upholding commit to Kyoto, he says: “There is no evidence confirming a positive linking between the level of carbon dioxide and temperature change. The U.N. Panel’s so called scientific data are considerably distorted and in many cases falsified” (Can We Defuse the Global Warming Time Bomb?, by James Hansen, 2003, pp.2-15). One of the main ideas of Ilarionov and others is to break the advanced economies of the U.S., Europe and Japan, by persuading the multi-national companies to move plants and jobs to developing countries in order not to comply with emissions restrictions. But the president of the American Policy Center in Washington – Tom DeWeese doesn’t agree that it makes sense, he states as the main concern and the prime target is the wealth of the United States it would not be wise to place factories in Third World countries, as the same amount of emissions would come out from jungles of South America instead of Chicago and in this case we are not talking about the protection of the environment any more. He is right in a way.

The main goal of the meeting in Kyoto was signing the amendment to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (the Rio Treaty) in order to require the signatory nations to take the necessary steps to reduce their emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, as these gases cause an alarm situation with global temperatures. The costs of signing it for the U.S. could be really high, as the county could be made to reduce between 10 and 20 % of greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2020, that would cause reduction of gross domestic products by 0 billion annually, it is equal to .700 per household. Certainly it was hard to prove that such costs are justified. Besides as millions of American people could be put at risk, several important questions appeared. The first one was about the possible merits or drawbacks of global warming. The World Bank researches prove that about one-third of the whole population suffers from water shortages. By 2025 they say – around 40 % of the whole population could be living in countries without sufficient water supplies. The crops will also suffer from lack of water. Global warming leads to more condensation and more evaporation, thus producing more rains. So it could be in a way an answer to the problem about lack of water. The second positive point about global warming is possibility of agriculture in North America and Europe, the southern regions of Greenland were not covered with ice when between 10th and 12th centuries the temperature was 0.5 degrees warmer than today, and could be also cultivated. The evidence of this was found when: “scientists from the National Science Foundation sponsored Greenland Ice Sheet Project 2 extracted in an ice core from Greenland’s ice sheet that spanned more than 100.000 years of climate history. Samplings from the core suggest that a Little Ice Age began between 1400 and 1420, blanketing the Vikings’ farms in ice and forcing them to abandon their farms in search of more hospitable climates”.( Michael Crichton’s State of Fear: Climate Change in the Cineplex, by Amy Ridenour pp.1-5). Thus global warming could mean more agricultural productivity and more water resources.

The idea that great storms are connected with global warming is sometimes called a myth. Those who say so find little evidence to support this fact and also to support a conclusion that there is a connection between global warming and increasing number of such pests and mosquitoes that bring malaria, yellow fever and other diseases.  The researches of George C. Marshal institute show that most severe storms are more associated with warm and cold weather, for example in the North Sea the storms occurred between 15th and 16th centuries after the onset of Little Ice Age. The United Health Organization writes that with the grow of international traveling and great number of migrations and refugees people have the chance to communicate more, and thus the diseases are spread more quickly, not just from one person to another, but also from one continent to another.

Another important question concerns the global warming itself. Depending on the time period we are discussing the planet is either warming or not. Our planet has experienced several periods of warming and cooling. In his article in 1994 Richard Kerr offered his point of view about this issue: “In order for a climate model to have credibility, it must first be able to reliably “predict” current climate. … Some “tune” their models by adjusting the strength of solar radiation; others by adjusting the transfer of energy between the ocean and the atmosphere to get just the desired results. The result is climate models that are largely worthless”. (When Science Meets Politics on Global Warming, by Roy W. Spencer, 1998 pp.1-4).

Another question concerns economical results of reducing of greenhouse gas emissions. The plan as to reduce them to their 1990 level by 2000 and with further reductions for 2010 and 2020. This would make the taxes for carbon dioxide raise up to 0 0 pro metric ton. Then by 2010 this could cause about 500.000 – one million job loses in U.S. The situation in Australia would be even worse, as they have a strong mining sector. The economies of developing countries would also be sensitive to these reductions in carbon dioxide emissions. The emissions in Brazil grew by 20%, in India – by 28%, in Indonesia – by 40% between 1990 and 1995.Thus developing nations and oil exporters have fears concerning their economic futures. That is why developing nations were exempted from reduction mandate under the Berlin mandate.

So the main point of political leaders is that the high costs for reducing greenhouse gas emissions are not worth the climate benefits they could bring. There is a point of view that even if such steps are necessary for improving our climate, we should not hurry and should at first improve our knowledge about causes and consequences of global warming, we should develop technology that could reduce the greenhouse emissions per unit of output, increase the reflectivity of atmosphere. The supporters of this position state that there are a lot of other important economical, scientific and political issues that need to be solved and there is no reason to rush to conclusions about global warming, as scientists themselves are a kind of swept up in the moment. Even after the Kyoto was coming into force constant debates between climate skeptics and global warming “supporters” continued. For example when Kevin Trenberth, being a head of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change suggested that there was a connection between climate changes and wave of hurricanes,  Christopher Landsea, hurricane expert at America’s national Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration wrote in his public letter that: “because of Dr. Trenberth’s pronouncements. The IPCC process has been subverted and compromised, its neutrality lost” (When Science Meets Politics on Global Warming, by Roy W. Spencer, 1998 pp.1-4).

The concepts of “nature” and “environment” were reconstructed. Actually the human-made phenomenon – global warming- is somehow considered environmental. Some people believe that this framing is political, not just conceptual problem. When the term environment is used it means something that is “out there” and needs fixing, but in reality the problem can not be considered external, as it is within people and not out. And it was and will be the humans’ problem.

Overall, the warming of the Earth has become a serious problem concerning, scientists, citizens and of course policy-makers. It is certainly hard to give one-sided characteristics to all effects, results and reasons of the global warming described above, there are certainly possibilities that not all recent researches and conclusions of scientists are true to life 100%, and the statement that in several decades we will know much more about climate changing and global warming has also some rational points. But on the other hand it is hard to deny the fact that the human beings do influence the climate and the nature greatly. These issues touch every single person on the planet and the whole mankind. They should bother the policy making people as well. They have to care for the wealth of the country but to simply deny all the negative facts about global warming is hardly the best way out. But unfortunately it usually happens so that the politics are more interested in real facts concerning finance and industrial developments than in vague future of the whole planet. As the whole industrial process and thus the economy of almost any country depends on its usage of natural resources, the climate seems a low “price” for spoiling them. When they start to think about problems caused by climate change, they think first of all about refugees, loss of job places, food shortages because of bad development of agriculture and so on.

Creation of More States: Broad Way to Socio-economic Developments in Nigeria

Although some have argued against creation of states in the country, stating that such can only lead to over-dependence on the federal government, I differ from this argument, in that the experience drawn from the creation of states in Nigeria in previous years has yielded abundant dividends for the country. Many of these impacts this article will discuss as proves that the creation of states contrary to dissenting opinions has ushered in new dawn of growth and developments and in addition availability of social amenities in the country.

The remark that the Nigeria of today is much more developed than the Nigeria of 1966 before the creation of 12 States by Gen. Murtala Mohammed more than anything else holds water. The reason I feel indifferent to opinions that have arisen in condemnation of creation of more States in the Nigeria is that people who have been in condemnation of this arrangement fail to remember that the country is an artificial creation from many unrelated ethnic groups and tribes dissimilar in socially and religiously, and hurriedly put together for the benefit of the British. Today, neither our government nor the British who artistically created the country can statistically state how many tribes and ethnic groups that make up the Nigerian State. All our records tell us is Nigeria has is a country with more than 250 ethnic groups.

As a country with over 250 ethnic groups with 250 ethnic groups as our records tell us, political grouping of peoples with similar linguistics, history, ancestries, traditions, and other criteria will guarantee sense of belonging, off course granted that many would want to argue that as a nation, we need to co-exist. Co-existence is important and necessary but certain political wills and other certain tools are necessary if this is to be achieved. International Relations experts are aware of the big gap existing between “Nation-State” and “State-Nation.” The British tried to mould one geo-political entity with people that never imagined they could ever come together as one.

As we have already experienced in the country, marginalization reigns in the country, and minority ethnic groups made to geographically squat with giant ethnic groups within the country have no voices at all. It is for this reason that most ethnic groups in the country continue to shed tears of marginalization. Those of us with good knowledge of politico-economic situation of the Igbo people in generality have an unlimited understanding of what marginalization is all about. The South-East is the only geo-political zone of the country with only 5 States even as most the areas of the Geo-political zone with oil have been deliberately and carefully annexed to other States notably Rivers State. A new kind of marginalization of marginalization I am particular about is that which even ensures that peoples lumped in a States are still marginalized.

No sooner the National Assembly of the country announced the creation of more States than about 50 proposals were registered with the Country’s law makers. For sure, the people understand the immense benefits inherent in forming an organized political community as part of the country. The importance of Statehood forming part of the country cannot be overemphasized, it is a result of this development that the Law makers of Lagos State was able to successfully adopt Yoruba language as its second official language. One effect this has created is that the people of this State see one another as a people with common destiny. Discrimination again if ever it exists becomes limited, because the basis of intensely discriminating against one another becomes reduced to the barest minimum.

Cry of marginalization reigns in the country because the government of the country has not really gotten it wholly right when creating States in the country, thus federating amongst the existing States of the country is strangely suspicious and inefficiently meant to be. In the first place, it has made absolute nonsense of the geo-political zone, a new political design, which has no place whether in the administration or geographical composition of Nigeria. This would have at least found sense if political appointments in the country are genuinely designed to rotate among  these geo-political zones, rather geo-political zones merely exist as regions.

Number of States comprising geo-political zones in the country are unequal, yet the basis for arriving at which zone should posses more States is uniquely indeterminate, who can tell me the reason certain political zones of the country have as much as 7 States while many have 6 and even as low as 5. This is what creation of more States in the country will set out to correct. Our law makers should also see to it that both regions of the country i.e. North and south have equal number of States, so that both regions will regions will have equal number of representatives in all affairs of the State. Creation of more States will therefore usefully correct this impression.

Though one is absolutely unsure of exactly how many States the national Assembly may want to create, advisedly, I would implore the House to consider some necessary factors in creating these States to act as a limitation for future cry for more. Some of these factors or criteria to be given consideration should be linguistics, economic viability, ancestral history, homogeneity, histories, agreement to come together etc. Economic viability is necessary because over dependence on the federal government will further add burden on the central government, and in over all cause a reduction in the allocations to other States. A situation whereby a State may not be able to pay salaries if created should be totally avoided. This has formed one argument of the opponents of new State creation, but we know that if certain small and less economic viable States can survive, others alike are certain to survive.

Ancestral history, linguistics, homogeneity and histories are all necessary determinant factors in the creation of States, this is because a people are what they choose to be, and should be regarded as they so wish. The people of Anioma for instance today the oldest agitators for the creation of their own State are a people who under willing agreement decided to come together and form a State and a people in spite of difference in ethnicities. It is particularly wonderful that this group comprise of Enuani (Igbo,) Ika, Ndokwa, Ukwani/Ndokwa, Aboh, these peoples are willingly joined together by shared aims, being the first of its kind in a country where separatism is deemed preferable to unity. The Anioma people demonstrated the possible of different ethnics coming together to form one ethnic group, and has since been so since 1951 since the founding fathers of the union practically actualized the socio-political action.

Linguistics should also form the basis of creating States in any environment because it is a natural cause that unity, peace and progress only prevails in an environment where the people see themselves as one. The case of the adoption of Yoruba as the language of law making in Lagos state has been cited in this work. Creation of States should rather gather displaced peoples who see themselves as lost because they are forcefully made to stay in the midst of people who they are bound to distance themselves from. It is for this reason that agitation for State creation continues. People should not be unwillingly placed where they not belong.

What  is the sense in having an Ika town of Igbanke in Edo State when they are in fact Anioma, recognize this and even regularly hold social inclined meetings with their Anioma kits and kin? The Igbanke for as long as they remain in Edo State where they do not naturally belong will continue to view themselves as strangers, which they really are. This ugly development explains the reason the community is in utmost marginalization, it was an impression Babangida failed to correct in 1991 and the opportunity is here once again.

Today’s Delta State is one which everyone agrees deserves further splits into several States because if for anything, the Anioma people should be made to exit the State with a State of their own joined by the Igbanke people presently unwholesomely lumped in Edo State where they do not belong. Anioma State should be created with its capital at Asaba, while the present State should remain but with its capital either in Warri or Ugheli. The Government may further venture into creating Ijaw and Itstekiri States from the said Delta State to make the State a non-volatile one. The Idoma nation presently located in Benue state, North Central also have a valid claim to statehood, this peoples need Apa State, as we know, the Idoma nation is one that has never produced a governor of the State, quite akin to the Anioma people of Delta State. A State will carve the political verves of the people.

On why more States should created in the country, the impact of this is too immense to mention here but we know that States that have been created so far in the country have all become developed more than they were when situated in other States. Anyone in doubt should imagine how many state and federal universities that existed in the country when Nigeria had 12/19 States and compare with how many in existence now with 36 States. With creation of more States it is compulsory that more ministries, universities, polytechnics, airports, seaports, Banks, press centres, mosques, church headquarters, government offices, stadiums, general hospitals, International organization centres, and other institutions necessary to make State etc that come with it. These may not all exist within a day but certainly they must be seen to exist in a state no more how long it takes.

There come into existence more job openings, people migrate into these newly created States to discover opportunities for greener pastures, which occasion leads to decongestions of major States like Lagos and Kano. Opportunities once again are almost immediately created for politicians who must jostle for political appointments and positions, secretariats are constructed. Roads are constructed; bridges are also constructed, with the governor of such state seeking to explore every available means of discovering means of revenue.

Who says creation of states does not come with benefits?

The Geographic Standpoint of the Mississippi River

The Geographic Standpoint of the Mississippi River

Mississippi’s name was derived from the “misi-ziibi” Ojibwe word which means “Great River”. Another Ojibwe term for it would be “Gichi-ziibi” which means “Big River”. It is regarded as the United States’ 2nd longest river.

The famous Mississippi River is regarded as the United States’ 2nd longest river. It has a length of 3,734 kilometers coming from the Lake Itasca that is found in Minnesota, its source, going to the Gulf of Mexico, its mouth. The recognized longest would be the noted Missouri River, its tributary, which measures 3,767 kilometers.

The famous Mississippi River is actually a part of the so-called “Jefferson-Missouri-Mississippi River System”, North America’s largest recognized river system. It is also included amongst the worlds largest. With a length of 6,275 kilometers, it ranks as the 4th longest. With an average discharge amounting to 572,000 cubic feet, it ranks as the 10th largest.

Amongst the various long Mississippi tributaries, the longest is indicated as the popular Missouri River and followed by the documented Arkansas River. Thus, if according to water volume, it is the renowned Ohio River that ranks as the largest.

Mississippi’s name was derived from the “misi-ziibi” Ojibwe word which means “Great River”. Another Ojibwe term for it would be “Gichi-ziibi” which means “Big River”.

Hence, Mississippi River’s widest point is actually Lake Onalaska, which is beside La Crosse, Wisconsin. It is about 6.4 kilometers wide. Since the so-called Lock and Dam No. 7 created Lake Onalaska, it is indicated that the historically widest natural spot with over 2 miles and 3 kilometer wide measurement would be Lake Pepin. However, this area is more of a reservoir rather than a “free flowing river”. As for the areas that feature the Mississippi River as a “real river”, it is noted that they exceed a mile when it comes to their width and they are located in many places along the Mississippi River’s lower course.

Moreover, the Mississippi River is divided into two parts, the “Upper Mississippi” and the “Lower Mississippi”. For the Upper Mississippi, its source would come from the south towards the renowned Ohio River. The Lower Mississippi, on the other hand, its source would come from Ohio towards its mouth which is beside New Orleans, Louisiana.

Furthermore, the Upper Mississippi has a series composed of 29 dams and locks, which were mostly built during the 1930s. Their design is mainly maintaining a 9-feet deep channel meant for commercial barging of traffic. With regards to the formed lakes, these are being utilized for recreational fishing and boating. Although the dams actually make this river wider and deeper, it still doesn’t stop it. In fact, flood control is not even one of its intentions. In the event of high flows, the gates, which are mostly submersible, are being completely opened. With this, the dams would basically cease its function. Thus, just beneath St. Louis, Missouri, you will find that the Mississippi River is already free flowing. This is amidst being constrained by several levees and generally directed by several wing dams.

On record, the famous Mississippi River runs throughout a total of 10 states. It is even utilized in order to define the portions of the borders of these states. Plus, during the time when these borders were being established, it is the middle part of the riverbed that acts as the line for defining the state’s borders. Although the river has shifted since that time, there were no indicated changes with the lines of Iowa, Wisconsin, Missouri, Illinois, Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee. Up to now, they still go after the Mississippi River’s former bed.

When it comes to the Mississippi River’s watershed, it is indicated also that it has the world’s 3rd largest catchment or drainage basin. It follows the Congo River and Amazon River. Aside from this, it can drain about 41 percent of the total 48 US contiguous states. This basin can cover over 3,225,000 square kilometers, which also includes either parts or all of the 31 states as well as 2 Canadian provinces. Thus, this drainage basin is emptied at the actual Gulf of Mexico.

The Mississippi River’s major tributaries are as follows:

1.Mississippi

•Yazoo River
•Big Black River

2.Louisiana

•Red River

3.Arkansas

•Arkansas River
•White River

4.Kentucky

•Ohio River

5.Illinois

•Kaskaskia River
•Big Muddy River
•Illinois River
•Rock River

6.Missouri

•Missouri River

7.Iowa

•Skunk River
•Des Moines River
•Maquoketa River

8.Wisconsin

•Chippewa River
•Wisconsin River

9.Minnesota

•Crow River
•Minnesota River

10.Wisconsin and Minnesota

•St. Croix River

When it comes to the drainage area of the Mississippi River, it actually drains the areas between the renowned Appalachian Mountains and Rocky Mountains. This is excluding the areas being drained by the Hudson Bay which is through the North’s Red River, Rio Grande and the famous Great Lakes. It is also noted that the actual retention time from the popular Lake Itasca towards the Gulf would be around 90 days.

With regards to the Upper Mississippi River, it is further divided into 3 distinct sections:

1. The headwaters – This is from the actual source towards Saint Anthony Falls.
2. A somewhat series of lakes that are man-made in between St Louis, Missouri and Minneapolis.
3. Middle Mississippi – This is a “free flowing river” that runs downstream of the actual confluence with St. Louis’ Missouri River.

The tributaries for the Upper Mississippi River would adjoin the:

• Minnesota River – Twin Cities
• Des Moines River – Keokuk, Iowa
• Wisconsin River – Prairie du Chien
• Ohio River – Cairo, Illinois
• Missouri River and Illinois River – St. Louis, Missouri

With regards to the Lower Mississippi River, the sub-tributaries would include the:

• Platte River – Missouri River’s tributary
• Tennessee River – Ohio River’s tributary
• Arkansas River – Arkansas
• Atchafalaya River – Louisiana (Mississippi’s major distributaries)

Thus, the fresh water that flows from the famous Mississippi River going towards the renowned Gulf of Mexico doesn’t combine immediately with the salt water. It will stay intact while it flows towards the Gulf, and towards the regarded Straits of Florida. Then, it will enter the so-called Gulf Stream. After this, it will round Florida’s tip and go up towards the southeastern coat towards Georgia’s latitude. It is only after this that it will mix with the ocean thoroughly and will not be detected by the assigned MODIS anymore.

The average annual discharge of the famous Mississippi River is between 200,000 up to 700,000 cubic feet. Even if it is the world’s fifth largest river by volume, this is only a fraction of what the Amazon River can do. It can move approximately seven million cubic feet during the wet seasons. At an average the famous Mississippi River can only stand with about a 1/11th fraction of the Amazon’s capability. Thus, even so, it is still twice of the regarded Columbia River’s and six times the popular Colorado River’s volume.

Stop Losses the Right Way, Where, and How

Stop Losses the Right Way, Where, and How

When volatility is high and stocks whipsaw up and down, how do you know where to place a stop loss?  Is there a right distance from the stock’s price to place the stop loss?  Is there a correct procedure to determine where to put it?  As the stock approaches the stop loss, you may get nervous and want to cancel the stop loss so the stock will not be sold.  How do you keep from selling too soon or from getting “psyched” out of a good stop loss (as when emotions cause a person to second-guess reason) and staying with a bad position too long?  The answer to the first questions is related to the answer to the last question.  If your stop loss placement is mathematically sound and based on the laws of probability, and you truly understand and accept what that means, you won’t be as easily psyched out.  That is a major advantage of a volatility stop loss.  It is based on mathematically determined significance.  The same can be said for stop losses based on support levels.  A breakdown through a support level is an event of significance.

Getting “psyched out” is a psychological problem that often gets in the way of disciplined investing. Once, when I was managing accounts on behalf of our advisory firm, a client called and asked if it wouldn’t be a good idea to have stop-losses in place to protect us if any of our stocks plunged. I had just taken the positions and had not yet placed the stops. At the time, I agreed that stop-losses would be appropriate. I had been teaching clients for many months about the need to implement a stop loss for every position. The lessons apparently were sinking in.  The feedback I was getting from clients suggested that they were in agreement about the need to sell quickly when a stock declines more than is characteristic for the stock or when it plunged through a pre-determined level of support.  However, when one of those stop-losses was triggered, a client called who wanted to know why I sold when the stock was low. This person wanted to wait for the stock to rebound before selling.  This is a form of seller’s remorse.  The client agreed that selling early while the loss was still small was the best procedure.  However, when it came down to locking in a small loss, the individual was conflicted. He agreed with the strategy in theory but not with its implementation.  Nobody likes to take a loss.  Here is a special Bulletin: any person who does not use stop losses is begging to be taught a lesson in risk control.  The market will oblige.

There are those who firmly believe in risk control but get “psyched out” of their discipline by the market.  For example, a person might try to use a stop-loss but then give up on stop-losses altogether when that stop is triggered just before the stock resumes its climb.  The root of the stop-loss “problem” is the uncertainty that stems from most people’s lack of knowledge regarding proper stop placement. They either place the stop too far away from the stock, or they place it so close that it is virtually certain to be triggered.

If a stock repeatedly rebounds after a decline to , then there is support at .  That means there is demand at that level.  If the stock drops through that price, it means the selling was severe enough that it overwhelmed all the buyers at that level.  That is a significant event.  Just below that buying support is where a stop loss belongs.  If the stock breaks through that support, it is destined to go lower.  Our traders at stockdisciplines.com look for significant events like this and they also look for events that are statistically significant.  That is, when stock behavior is outside the normal distribution of excursions for that stock, it is considered significant.  Here is an example.  If it is normal for a stock to make an excursion of up to 2% on either side of a 50-day moving average within a period of 100 days, then an excursion of 3% below the moving average would be significant.  Refusing to sell on a significant negative event will not stop the decline.  It will only cost you money.  People do not like to admit they are wrong.  They cling to the hope that the stock will eventually live up to expectations.

Assume that the distribution of a stock’s daily low prices about its moving average indicates that downward price excursions equal to or greater than 4% below the stock’s moving average occur only once in 200 days.  Assume also that you are trying to capture the gains achieved by trends that last about 100 days.  A spike of 4% below the moving average would be well outside the probability envelope of your investment time-horizon (the stock is deviating much more than is “normal” for the stock).   That kind of price excursion would be a significant event.  That is where a stop loss belongs.  It would be foolish to keep holding the stock and hoping for a recovery.  To do so would be blatant evidence of a lack of discipline.  A disciplined trader would sell immediately.  Even if the trader should later decide to repurchase a stock recently sold, the decision will be based on much greater clarity of thought and with more objectivity after it is sold than the decision to retain a stock that is already in the portfolio.

Of course, the caller mentioned above knew the stock was at a low by hindsight. If the stock had continued to fall, the caller would have thought the move was well-timed. The point is that at any given moment one can never be 100% sure what a stock will do next.  One of the biggest errors a trader or investor can make is to confuse what is with what is hoped for or with what has been.  The best traders always keep their eyes on the present. Acting on what is (on what the facts actually are in the present) sometimes means relinquishing your preconceptions about what a stock ought to do.  If a stock has broken through support, forget about your expectations for the stock.  The company may be great and its product may be wonderful, but its stock is for some other time.  Additional information and videos about stop losses are at http://www.stockdisciplines.com/stop-losses

Die Cuts Are Hard To Find

Die Cuts Are Hard To Find

I have been scrapbooking for about 22 years. I started when my daughter was around three years old. At that time scrapbook die cuts or any other type of embellishments where just not around or very hard to find.  It’s a lot of fun for me to see how my children’s books have evolved over the many years. My two oldest children’s baby books are very simple and plain. I used colored markers to border the pages or draw dots and swirls just to add color.  Did they even make illustrated diecuts in 1986?

There are thousand and thousands of products for scrapbookers to purchase and use today.  I am always looking for items that are inexpensive and cute.  I always make sure that the products I buy are acid-free, so that our memories are preserved correctly. I love using die cuts.  They are a great simple embellishment that help me to scrapbook quickly.  I’m not one that can speed hours on a single scrapbooking page, because of the fact: each of my children have their own scrapbooks. (“yes” books with an “s”.) I was thrilled when my daughter was old enough to take over her own scrapbook. So, right now I am doing 5 scrapbooks. One for each of my four boys and one for my husband and me. (“Yes” I am behind by a couple of years, but that’s another story. I will get caught up I always do.)

Anyway……. I enjoy using diecuts that I’ve purchased at “fair-type” events. I have found that using die cuts is a “speedy-fast” way to construct creative scrapbook pages.

However….I have found that finding them at craft stores is getting harder and harder, if not impossible. I asked an employee once and was told that “the personal diecut machine has taken over that market.” I do own one but, nothing can take the place of a cute illustrated die cut and they are so much FASTER to use!

I started looking on-line to purchase some and everything I found was UGLY! “OK” my exact words…”butt ugly!” Old school that were just the shape of an object. YUCK!
Then to make matters worse, when you use a search engine and type in “scrapbooking die cuts” you get hundreds of sites claiming they carry them. PROBLEM is you can’t find them!! I am forever getting lost in on-line scrapbook supply stores? (“Yes” I’ve lost my parked car before too!) They carry everything but the kitchen sink! And most of the time I don’t even find diecuts they claim they have on their site, if by chance I do…UGLY!

So…This is how  No Ugly Die Cuts became my reality. We are a growing Internet business dedicated to your total satisfaction.  We pride ourselves in having a very user friendly website. Our site is simple to navigate that anyone can use it.
